Hardcore will not be in WoW Forever at launch: it arrives later, and the official roadmap places it in winter 2026-27, with no exact date. It will be a separate ruleset and an enclosed ecosystem: what you earn in Hardcore can reach the other rulesets, but nothing flows in, and if your character dies it can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included. Legacy challenges from other rulesets do not count there, Hardcore ones count everywhere, and it will arrive with 12 Legacy challenges of its own.
When Hardcore arrives
Hardcore is not one of the rulesets at launch on November 4, 2026: Blizzard says it will arrive sometime after. Its What's Next panel recap lists it among what follows the first raids on December 9, and the official roadmap places it in winter 2026-27. This is where it sits on the calendar:
- November 4, 2026Launch
- December 9, 2026First raids
- Winter 2026-27Hardcore
Hardcore ruleset after launch. Progress flows outward only; nothing flows in.
- Spring 2027First major update
- Summer 2027Revamped iconic raid
Roadmap seasons are a guide: Blizzard has not given a day for Hardcore. We will add it as soon as it is announced.
Legacy in Hardcore
This is what Blizzard has detailed most about Hardcore, in its article on the Legacy system. Legacy grants account-wide points for completing challenges (the beta client has 65), but Hardcore works apart:
- Legacy Points are shared across your Battle.net account and can be used by all your non-Hardcore characters.
- Legacy challenges completed in other rulesets do not show up in Hardcore.
- The other way round works: a challenge you earn in Hardcore is granted in every other ruleset.
- Challenges in the Player vs. Player category (12 in the beta client) cannot be completed in Hardcore.
- That is why Hardcore will arrive with 12 new Legacy challenges of its own, and Blizzard plans to add more Hardcore-specific Legacy challenges and perks later.
Legacy itself grew out of Hardcore: according to Blizzard, the team loved seeing so many players constantly leveling, and wanted to bring that energy to Forever by rewarding a fresh start, without asking anyone to face Hardcore's deadly consequences.
If your character dies
In Hardcore every decision matters and death carries lasting consequences. What Blizzard has explained is what happens to the character afterwards:
- A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included.
- What it earned in Hardcore (progress, collections and rewards) can become available elsewhere, so you carry those accomplishments forward when you move out of Hardcore.
How that transfer works and exactly what the character keeps is not in the announcements: see what Blizzard has not said.
An enclosed ecosystem
Hardcore will be a fully enclosed ecosystem. Normal, PvP and Roleplaying share your account's collections and Legacy Points; Hardcore is handled apart, and progress only goes one way:
- Out of Hardcore, yes: progress, collections and rewards earned there can become available in the other rulesets.
- Into Hardcore, no: progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore.
- You cannot hop freely between rulesets either: in Forever, to play under another ruleset you create a new character there, so you start Hardcore with a new character.
Who you can play with
Like the other rulesets, Hardcore is not a realm but a large ecosystem of its own. These are the rules Blizzard has given:
- Groups, dungeons and raids only with players on the same ruleset: cross-ruleset grouping is not supported.
- Battlegrounds may include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore, which remains separate.
- You can create characters of both factions (on PvP, only one), although Horde and Alliance still cannot group together.
What Blizzard has not said yet
With what has been published so far, these have no official answer yet. We do not fill them with guesses: we will add them when Blizzard says.
- The day it arrives: the roadmap only gives a season (winter 2026-27).
- Which 12 Legacy challenges will be Hardcore-only.
- How a character that dies is transferred: whether it is automatic, whether it costs anything and what it keeps (level, gear, gold).
- Whether and how Hardcore characters can spend Legacy Points: Blizzard says the points are for non-Hardcore characters and that it plans perks specific to that mode.
- What other rules it will have besides permanent death, and whether they will follow WoW Classic's Hardcore realms.

Frequently asked questions
When does Hardcore come to WoW Forever?
After launch, with no exact date. The official roadmap places it in winter 2026-27, and Blizzard lists it among what follows the first raids on December 9.
Will Hardcore be available at launch?
No. On November 4, 2026 you can pick Normal, PvP or Roleplaying; Hardcore comes later.
What happens if my Hardcore character dies?
It can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included, and what it earned in Hardcore can become available elsewhere. Blizzard has not detailed how the transfer works.
Can I move a Normal or PvP character to Hardcore?
No. Nothing from other rulesets flows into Hardcore, and in Forever you cannot hop freely between rulesets: to play Hardcore you will need a new character.
Do my Legacy challenges count in Hardcore?
Not the ones from other rulesets: they do not show up in Hardcore. The ones you earn in Hardcore, on the other hand, count in every other ruleset. PvP challenges cannot be done there, which is why Hardcore will arrive with 12 challenges of its own.
Can I play Hardcore with friends on another ruleset?
No. You can only group with players on your ruleset and of your faction, and battlegrounds do not mix Hardcore with the other rulesets either.
