Best professions for each class in WoW Forever

Which pair of professions suits you, what each one makes for leveling and for max level, which one fits your class and what changes in Forever. With the beta client recipes and no price predictions.

Short answer

For leveling, pair a gathering profession with the crafting one that uses its materials: Mining with Blacksmithing or Engineering, Herbalism with Alchemy and Skinning with Leatherworking. Tailoring and Enchanting need no gathering, so many players take them together. The pair that suits each class is in the table by class. Add Cooking (in Forever crafted food gives bonus experience), First Aid and Fishing, which are secondary and do not take a slot. Forever brings more than 600 new recipes: the beta client counts 952.

Best professions for each class

The recommendation comes from the professions section of each class guide; the profession with the most pieces, from the BiS of all its specializations and levels.

Skinning + LeatherworkingLeather and mail armour, quivers, ammo pouches and armour kitsRogues and druids (leather); hunters and shamans (leather and mail)
Tailoring + EnchantingCloth armour, bags and enchantmentsPriests, mages and warlocks; cloth drops from humanoid enemies
Two gathering professionsMaterials to sell or for your other charactersAnyone who wants materials without crafting

The pairs and who they suit are general Classic knowledge. What each profession makes in Forever is below, with the client data.

What each profession makes

Beta client recipes (1.60.1.70205) grouped by category, without the Season of Discovery ones the client still carries. The "Camping" recipes are the objects of the new campsite.

For leveling and for max level

How many times the best piece (BiS) for a slot, for some specialization, is crafted with each profession, according to our BiS for 28 specializations. It is the most objective way to see which profession gears you while leveling and which one still matters at the top.

ProfessionLevel 20Level 30Level 40Level 50Level 60
Tailoring545655420
Leatherworking354318393
Blacksmithing311914154
Enchanting07030
Engineering00900

At level 60, 72% of the best pieces drop from enemies and 25% come from quests, so gear professions weigh less; consumables matter more there: Alchemy flasks and elixirs, Cooking food and First Aid bandages.

Racials that help

Forever racials that touch a profession, according to the beta client:

  • Engineering SpecializationGnome

Your gnomish ingenuity reduces the rate of engineering devices failing or backfiring when you use them by 20%.

  • CultivationTauren

Cultivate a nearby herb, growing a duplicate you can harvest without requiring Herbalism skill. Each herb may only be cultivated once.

Beta change: Every herb now has a player-level requirement: the Herbalism skill needed to pick it, divided by 5. Herbs that need more than 300 Herbalism can be Cultivated at level 60.

What changes in Forever

What Blizzard has announced for professions:

  • More than 600 new recipes and expanded progression.
  • Crafted food gives a small XP bonus.
  • Each profession gains a new passive bonus.
  • A Professions tree inside Legacy.
  • Since build 70170 several Blacksmithing and Leatherworking recipes meant as random dungeon drops are available, and each creature can once again be skinned only once.

On top of that, in the beta client every Classic profession, gathering and secondary ones included, has recipes for campsite objects (three or more each). They are listed above, under "Camping".

The Legacy Professions tree (values at max rank, from the beta client):

  • Master Chef · 5 ranks

Your cooking recipes have a 50% chance to create an extra result.

  • Working Overtime · 5 ranks

Increases your chance to gain a skill increase from using any primary, secondary, or class-based tradeskill by 20%.

  • Bartering · 2 ranks

Reduces the gold price of items from all vendors by 10%.

  • Dedicated Study · 1 rank

Increases your skill by 1 in your lowest tradeskill among your Primary and Secondary tradeskills. If you have already reached 300 skill in your two current Primary Tradeskills and all three Secondary Tradeskills, you will gain 3 of a random Elemental Essence.

  • Bountiful Harvest · 5 ranks

You discover 100% more Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning.

  • Performance Bonus · 3 ranks

You have a 15% chance to receive 100% increased Merchant's Favor when you turn in a crate to the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics.

  • Luremaster · 2 ranks

While fishing with a Lure active, you have a 50% chance to catch an extra fish.

Comprehension is a new secondary skill, Mages only, from level 6: Study (Bundle of Scrolls) and Comprehend Scroll.

Frequently asked questions

How many professions can I have in WoW Forever?

Two primary ones plus the secondary skills, as in Classic. The client itself takes it for granted: the Legacy perk Dedicated Study mentions "your two current Primary Tradeskills and all three Secondary Tradeskills" (Cooking, First Aid and Fishing). Mages also get Comprehension, a new skill of their own.

Which profession makes the most gold?

We do not make price predictions: they will depend on each ruleset and on how the auction house moves once the game is out. What we do tell you is what each profession makes and how many new recipes it brings.

Which profession is best for leveling?

A gathering one, which levels by itself while you play, plus the crafting one that makes gear of your armour type. Adding up every specialization, at level 20 our BiS takes 54 pieces from Tailoring, 35 from Leatherworking and 31 from Blacksmithing. For your class, see the Best professions for each class table.

What is the best profession for each class?

See the Best professions for each class table: the pair each class guide recommends and the profession that provides the most pieces in its BiS.

What is Comprehension?

Comprehension is a new secondary skill, Mages only, from level 6: Study (Bundle of Scrolls) and Comprehend Scroll.
