Short answer

There is no "best class" in WoW Forever: Blizzard does not publish rankings and the beta does not let anyone reach level 60 yet. Pick the role you enjoy first: Warrior, Paladin and Druid can tank; Priest, Paladin, Druid and Shaman can heal; Warrior, Rogue, Paladin, Druid and Shaman deal melee damage; and Hunter, Mage, Priest, Warlock, Druid and Shaman deal ranged damage. If you want the biggest departure from Classic, the classes with the most new talents in the beta are Paladin and Warlock (18 each).

Classes by role

Each specialization has a role. The split comes from the stat weights of our BiS: tank, healer or damage; and, within damage, melee or ranged depending on the weapon and stats each tree values.

Feral druid is a single tree with two jobs: damage in Cat Form and tanking in Bear Form.

The nine classes at a glance

Each class summary comes from our class guides, written for Forever.

Warrior

TankMelee damage

The warrior is the melee class by definition: no mana, no pet and almost no self-healing (Forever adds Victory Rush). Everything revolves around rage, which builds up when you hit and get hit and is spent on abilities. That makes the warrior scale enormously with gear and turns the first few dozen levels into the hardest stretch in the game: with a poor weapon and little armour, every two-mob pull is a decision.

Hunter

Ranged damage

The hunter is the physical ranged damage class: it shoots with a bow, gun or crossbow, uses mana for its shots and aspects and always brings a pet that tanks for it. In Classic it is the most comfortable class to level solo, and in Forever it still is: the pet holds, you shoot and you almost never stop. Its three trees are all damage trees, so the difference between them is style, not role.

Mage

Ranged damage

The mage is the pure damage caster: cloth, mana, crowd control and the best utility in the game (portals, food and water, Polymorph). It does not heal, tank or own a pet, so everything it does is kill before things reach it and travel faster than anyone. In Forever, hit is one stat for spells, melee and ranged, and so is crit; on top of that, wands no longer gain spell power.

Rogue

Melee damage

The rogue is leather melee damage with energy that regenerates at a fixed pace and combo points that build on the target and are spent on finishers. Add stealth, poisons, stuns and the best ability in the game to pick its fights: a rogue decides when combat starts and, with Vanish, when it ends. It does not heal or tank and all three trees are damage, so the choice is one of style.

Priest

HealerRanged damage

The priest is the cloth healer by definition and, as Shadow, a very solid periodic-damage caster. It uses mana, wears cloth and has two tools no other class matches: Power Word: Shield and the widest variety of heals in the game. In return it is fragile and slow at killing outside Shadow. In Forever, on top of that, every priest race has its own spells, and several of them have changed during the beta.

Warlock

Ranged damage

The warlock is the cloth caster with a demon pet, periodic damage and an economy of its own: Life Tap turns health into mana and Drain Life takes it back from the enemy, so stamina is worth more than for any other caster. With a Voidwalker tanking, it levels as comfortably as a hunter; in exchange, in dungeons it is pure damage and control (Fear, Banish) with no healer or tank role.

Paladin

TankHealerMelee damage

The paladin is the plate hybrid: mana, seals and judgements, auras for the group, blessings and heals that in Classic made it more useful supporting than hitting. It can heal, tank and deal damage, and it is the class that changes most in Forever, with 14 entries in the build 1.60.1.70009 list, almost all so that Retribution and Protection work as real specializations.

Druid

TankHealerMelee damageRanged damage

The druid is the most complete hybrid in the game: it can tank, deal melee damage, cast from range and heal, and it switches roles by switching forms. In its normal form it uses mana to cast; in Bear Form it fights with rage, like a warrior; in Cat Form it uses energy and combo points, like a rogue. It wears cloth or leather, never mail. Shifting costs mana and it is rarely the best at any single job, but it levels solo very comfortably and fits any gap in a group.

Shaman

HealerMelee damageRanged damage

The shaman is the Horde's hybrid in Classic and, in Forever, the Alliance's too thanks to the dwarves. It uses mana for everything, wears cloth or leather until level 40 and mail from then on, can carry a shield and supports the group with totems: objects it plants on the ground, one per element (earth, fire, water and air), that give buffs or deal damage while they stand. It also has Ghost Wolf for travel and Reincarnation to come back to life.

General Classic knowledge

Resource, armour and what sets each class apart:

WarriorRageMail; plate from level 40No mana, no pet and no self-healing
HunterManaLeather; mail from level 40A pet that tanks; damage with bow, gun or crossbow
MageManaClothCrowd control, portals, food and water
RogueEnergy and combo pointsLeatherStealth, poisons and stuns

DruidMana; rage in Bear Form and energy in Cat FormCloth or leatherForms: it can tank, heal and deal damage
ShamanManaCloth or leather; mail from level 40Totems, shield and Reincarnation

This is general, verified Classic knowledge: it does not come from Forever data.

If what you want is…

  • Comfortable solo leveling: hunter and warlock, because their pet takes the hits for you, and the druid, which shifts to whatever it needs. That is what our hunter, warlock and druid guides say.
  • Leading the group: tank (Warrior, Paladin and Druid) or healer (Priest, Paladin, Druid and Shaman).
  • Switching roles: Warrior, Priest, Paladin, Druid and Shaman have trees for more than one role, and Paladin and Druid can do all three: tank, heal and deal damage.
  • Only dealing damage: Hunter, Mage, Rogue and Warlock have three damage trees; the difference between them is style, not role.

What changes in Forever for each class

Beta data: changes documented in Blizzard's notes, client talents compared with Classic Era, and new spellbook abilities. How many changes a class has does not say whether it is better or worse; it says how far it moves from its Classic self.

Once you have your class:

Frequently asked questions

What is the best class in WoW Forever?

It depends on the role you want to play. Nobody has level 60 data in Forever yet and we are not going to make up a ranking. What the data does show is how much each class changes: Paladin and Warlock have the most new talents. If you want to rank them your way, use the tier list maker.

Which class is best for leveling solo?

In Classic, hunters and warlocks are known as the most comfortable solo levelers thanks to their pets, and druids level comfortably by shifting forms. That is general Classic knowledge our Forever guides keep; the beta does not let anyone level to 60 yet.

Which classes can tank and heal?

Warrior, Paladin and Druid can tank. Priest, Paladin, Druid and Shaman can heal.

Are there new classes in Forever?

No: they are the nine Classic classes. What is new are 6 race and class combinations (Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin) and the Skyborne race.

Which class changes most from Classic?

By new talents, Paladin and Warlock (18 each). By changes documented in the beta notes, Druid (59).
