World of Warcraft: Forever has no realms, so there are no servers for a given language. When you create a character you pick a ruleset: Normal, PvP or Roleplaying, with Hardcore arriving after launch. To play with people who speak your language, Blizzard added the Preferred Online Language setting, which lets you encounter players who share that preference. It is account-wide and, once you change it, you have to wait 24 hours before changing it again.
No realms: what you pick instead
Blizzard removed the realm-selection screen. Instead, when you create a character you choose the kind of experience you want, and each ruleset works more like a broad player ecosystem than a traditional realm. It is not one giant realm for everyone either: each ruleset stays separate.
Normal
At launchThe baseline World of Warcraft experience: exploring, questing and cooperating, with PvP combat only when you choose to engage in it.
PvP
At launchFor players who want every trip into contested territory to carry more danger, excitement and open-world conflict.
Roleplaying
At launchFor players who want to lean deeper into the fantasy of Azeroth and find like-minded adventurers.
Hardcore
After launchThe ultimate challenge: every decision matters and death carries lasting consequences. The roadmap places it in winter 2026-27.
Preferred language, step by step
This is the tool Blizzard gives you to play with people who speak your language: according to the official announcement, it lets you encounter other players who share that preference. To set it:
- Open the Game Menu with Escape.
- Choose Options.
- Under the System heading, select Languages and Social.
- Pick your language under Preferred Online Language.
- It is an account-wide setting: it applies to all your characters at once.
- Once you change it, there is a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again.
- It is not a realm or a separate ruleset: you set it in the game options, not when creating a character.
The game itself is localized: the beta client already includes, for example, Spanish text (a few strings are still in English), which is where the Spanish names on this site come from.
If you group with players on the Spanish client, the English–Spanish name translator gives you every spell, item, zone and dungeon name in both languages.
Who you can play with
Even without realms, not everyone plays with everyone. According to Blizzard:
- You can group, run dungeons and raid with players who chose the same ruleset. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported.
- Factions stay separate: Horde and Alliance players cannot group together.
- Battlegrounds may include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays separate.
- Language is not among those limits: what decides who you can group with is your ruleset and your faction.
Factions and the PvP ruleset
On the PvP ruleset you can only create characters of one faction: once you create an Alliance character there, you cannot create a Horde one, and vice versa. On Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore you can have characters of both factions. For PvP, Blizzard is also adding faction-balance systems similar to Season of Discovery's, where new character creation could be temporarily limited for one faction.
Moving between rulesets
- You cannot hop freely between rulesets: to play on another one, you create a new character there.
- Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide and shared across rulesets, except Hardcore.
- Hardcore works apart: an enclosed ecosystem, a transfer when a character dies and Legacy rules of its own, all in the Hardcore guide.
Names unique per region
Without realms, names change too: each character has two names, like a first name and a surname, and the full combination must be unique within your region, so you can use a first name another player already has as long as the second one differs. With any upgrade edition you can reserve names from October 27 to November 3: dates, times for your region, naming rules and how to hide your surname are in the name reservation guide.

What Blizzard has not clarified
With what has been published so far, these have no official answer yet. We will add them as soon as Blizzard clarifies:
- Which languages the list will have, and whether regional variants of the same language (Spanish from Spain and Latin America, for example) will be separate options.
- How language matching works exactly: Blizzard only says you will encounter others who share your preference.
- Which regions there will be: names are unique "within your region", but Blizzard has not said whether players in Europe and the Americas can meet.

Frequently asked questions
Does WoW Forever have language servers?
No. Forever has no realms, so there are no realms for any language. You pick a ruleset and, in the game options, your Preferred Online Language to encounter players who share it.
Which ruleset should I pick?
The one that fits how you want to play: Normal if you want PvP only when you choose, PvP if you want a contested open world (and you can only have characters of one faction) and Roleplaying if you are into roleplay. Hardcore arrives after launch. To play with friends, you need the same ruleset and the same faction.
Can I play with friends who speak another language?
Blizzard does not list language among the grouping limits: the ones it gave are your ruleset and your faction. If you share both, you can group.
How often can I change my preferred language?
Once every 24 hours. It is an account-wide setting, so it changes for all your characters at once.
Can I move a character to another ruleset?
Not freely: to play on another ruleset you create a new character there. The exception is Hardcore: if a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer to another ruleset.
Is the game localized?
Yes. The beta client already includes other languages, such as Spanish; that is where the Spanish names of races and abilities on this site come from.
