Transmog: sets and appearances

The transmog rules Blizzard has shared and what the beta client adds: 5 sets with 45 pieces and 40 standalone appearances (cosmetics, shirts and tabards).

Data from the beta client (build 1.60.1.70205), compared with Classic Era 1.15.9.69722. An item is new when Classic Era does not have its ID.

How transmog works

12

What Blizzard has explained about the system. This is the beta: it can change.

  1. Transmog is optional: at a transmogrifier in certain cities you can set up your outfits or turn the system off entirely. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  2. If you choose Classic Mode the first time you launch the game, transmog starts turned off. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  3. With the system off you see other players in the gear they actually wear. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  4. Even with it off, you keep collecting the appearances of new gear in case you turn it on later. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  5. When a Bind on Pickup Uncommon or Rare item drops in a dungeon, its appearance goes to every eligible looter once the item is looted. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  6. The appearance of an epic raid item only unlocks for the player who gets the item (when it binds), not for the whole raid. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  7. Poor and Common items grant their appearance as soon as they are looted, without having to bind first. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  8. Item-type rules still apply: plate to plate and cloth to cloth. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  9. Low-level characters cannot use high-level appearances until level 60, when level restrictions are lifted for valid appearances in the collection. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  10. Cosmetic-only items are the exception, though Blizzard says there will be few of them in WoW Forever. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  11. With the system off you can still set up your own transmog to hide a slot such as your helm or cloak, or to show one appearance, and you still see whether other players hide their helm and cloak. Source: World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel Recap
  12. Since build 70170, selling a Bind on Equip item whose appearance you have not collected to a vendor makes it soulbound (it used to become Bound to Account). Source: WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated October 1

Transmog sets

5

The 5 sets in the beta client’s TransmogSet table (Classic Era has no such table), with the item that teaches the whole set and their pieces by slot.

Variants of one set 4

The client groups these 4 sets as variants of one set; each variant’s label is the client’s.

Shen'dorei Magister's Garb

Variant: Blue9 pieces

  • Type in the client: Cosmetic
  • Binds when picked up
  • The client restricts no class

How to get it: The client does not say, and Blizzard has not said.

The client also has 2 sets from later expansions with every piece hidden: they are not listed.

Other appearances

40

The 40 new cosmetics, shirts and tabards that belong to no set, by slot.

Client price: the client’s BuyPrice field. It does not prove that a vendor sells the item, and reputation discounts are not included.

Head 9

New gear: Head

Client prices under 1 silver are not shown: several pack and Legacy items carry 1 to 15 copper, which says nothing about a vendor.

What the client does not say

  • Where each set or appearance comes from: the client has no loot, vendor or quest reward tables, and the set table has no source text. This page only says it when Blizzard has.
  • What the internal flags of the sets and their pieces mean (for example, whether the robe or the vest is the main chest piece).
  • The client price is its BuyPrice field: it does not prove that a vendor sells the item.
  • What the pieces look like: this page only shows their icons.
